I have dreamed of Antarctica since I was a little kid. Cruising with Aurora Expeditions has showed me how much the expedition team truly cares about this land. Every day felt like the coolest science class. We learned how Antarctica is not owned by anyone but it is governed by an Antarctic treaty. IAATO is the organization founded in 1991 to advocate and promote the practice of safe and environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic. IATTO rules this continent and we must play by their rules. Each landing spot has restrictions for capacity of people and enough time between visitors so that the land has time to heal regenerate and recover. They have us clean our boots before stepping onto land and afterwards so we don’t bring anything in and nothing gets brought back on the ship. This form of sustainable travel means you are not allowed to sit or touch ANYTHINg on land. No grabbing rocks and keeping a safe distance from the wildlife.

The folks on Aurora Expeditions go above and beyond to educate us all about the history, geology, geography, biology, paleontology for each expedition. In fact we have all become ambassadors for this continent and it is now our responsibility to share these stories and keep Antarctica alive. I have fully embraced being a wilderness man whether it was kayaking amongst glaciers or snorkeling with wildlife.
